Changes in Facebook – who will get your data if you do nothing?

At F8 (Facebook Developers Conference) last week, Mark Zuckerberg announced changes to Facebook that open up lots of exciting new uses that can be exploited by developers and marketers as they try to make your use of the web more interesting and fun. For example, as you join a site like Yelp, it will already know alot about your preferences and will customise what you see accordingly. Unfortunately, the price of this is a big relaxation in privacy setting with your friends being able to release some of your data for use in this way UNLESS you take action.

There are quite a few articles that explain this, for example, this one but the one that I found most helpful is psychemedia’s blog post that clearly shows you how to stop your friends from allowing your data to be passed on. I strongly advise you to make active choices about your data sharing in Facebook – if you do nothing your data could be passed on and stored by other organisations.

As part of its apparent campaign to redefine ‘privacy’, Facebook is changing what you could have expected to be private to groups specified by you:

“Certain parts of users’ profiles, “including your current city, hometown, education and work, and likes and interests” will now be transformed into “connections,” meaning that they will be shared publicly. If you don’t want these parts of your profile to be made public, your only option is to delete them.”

Is this part of a general spirit of openness? or an offering for data miners and targeted advertisers, who may be willing to pay handsomely for the privilege. read more about it here

It should be submitted as a Word document through Blackboard. You won’t lose many marks for submission through Sispace (as long as you have told us the url). Has society’s attitude to privacy changed in the few years since Facebook was initiated?

Mark Zuckerberg appears to claim that we are all more comfortable with sharing what once might have been seen as private, and that is why Facebook’s privacy changes are OK. There is a lot of discussion on this claim, since the relaxation of privacy makes our data much more useable by others (marketers and their audience) and hence more valuable to Facebook. Read about what he said and danah boyd’s very interesting response.

What do you think? Are you happy to share your name, profile picture, gender, current city, networks, Friends List, and all the pages you subscribe to on Facebook? It’s that last one that troubles me a little.
